About Elgin

Elgin sits 25 miles east of downtown Austin on US Highway 290 at the intersection with State Highway 95. Its motto is "Perfectly Situated," and it earns that phrase: close enough to Austin for a quick commute, far enough to hold onto a distinct identity shaped by railroads, brickmakers, and sausage makers going back 150 years.

The town was platted in 1872 as a stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. It was originally called Glasscock, after George W. Glasscock, a local landowner and Republic of Texas soldier from the 1830s. The name changed on August 18, 1872, when it was renamed for Robert Morris Elgin, the railroad's land commissioner and surveyor. A post office followed in 1873. By 1890, the population had reached 1,100 and the town supported two hotels, a broom factory, two doctors, a dentist, and its own newspaper, the Elgin Courier. The Chamber of Commerce still occupies the original 1872 Houston and Texas Central Railroad building.

Two industries made Elgin famous well beyond Central Texas. Brick manufacturing began in 1884 when Thomas O'Conner started a brick-making enterprise, eventually earning the city the title "Brick Capital of the Southwest." Two brickyards still operate today. And in 1882, a man named William J. Moon began selling sausage door-to-door from his slaughterhouse. Four years later, he established Southside Market in downtown Elgin, selling barbecue from the back of his meat market. That shop claims to be the oldest continuously operating BBQ joint in Texas.

What Makes Elgin Unique

  • "Sausage Capital of Texas": The Texas Legislature officially proclaimed this title in a 1995 House resolution. The designation is backed by over a century of meat-crafting tradition.
  • "Brick Capital of the Southwest": Elgin's historic downtown is a designated Texas Main Street City and sits on the National Register of Historic Places, featuring some of the most notable brickwork in the region.
  • Southside Market's secret recipe: When Ernest Bracewell Sr. purchased Southside Market in 1968, the only person who knew the original sausage recipe was Bud Frazier, who had worked at the market since 1902. Bracewell spent two months watching Frazier work and documenting every step. The Bracewell family still operates the smokehouse today, making fresh sausage daily from that same recipe.
  • A semiconductor manufacturer in sausage country: Yerico Manufacturing, which produces electrostatic chuck components for the semiconductor industry, is investing $13 million to expand its Elgin facility by 50,000 square feet, adding 30 jobs. The Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund contributed a $1.3 million grant to the project, announced in late 2025.
  • WPA mural inside the post office: Julius Woeltz painted "Texas Farm" as part of the 1930s Federal Arts Project. The mural, still inside the Elgin Post Office, depicts men harvesting vegetables and picking corn.

Living in Elgin

Elgin offers a rare combination for Central Texas: relatively affordable housing at a median home value of $203,700, a median household income of $85,262, and direct access to Austin via US 290. The ZIP code population of roughly 24,919 reflects a wider area that has grown substantially over the past two decades. The city proper grew from about 5,700 residents in 2000 to 9,784 by the 2020 census, a 71 percent increase in twenty years.

That growth is accelerating. In December 2025, Elgin City Council unanimously approved Elgin Commons, a $200 million retail and hotel development on 60 acres along US 290 west of the existing Whataburger. Developed by American Ventures, the project is projected to create 1,300 jobs and generate an estimated $60 million in city revenue over 30 years. Infrastructure work began in April 2026. A second mixed-use project called Silo Ranch, a roughly 76-acre development by Cromwell Commercial Group, was announced in March 2026 and includes hotel space, multifamily housing, and commercial lots.

Cost of living remains one of Elgin's practical draws. It is far enough from Austin to avoid the city's housing premium, but close enough that many residents commute to tech, healthcare, and government jobs in the capital.

Things to Do

Southside Market and BBQ at 1212 Hwy. 290 has been operating since 1886. The menu centers on the Original Hot Sausage, served the traditional way with saltines. Weekends draw visitors from across Central Texas.

Meyer's Elgin Smokehouse on Hwy 290 is a fourth-generation family operation. Henry Meyer brought a sausage recipe from Germany to Elgin in the 19th century. His descendant R.G. Meyer founded Meyer's Elgin Sausage Company in 1949. In 1998, Gregg and Gary Meyer opened the current smokehouse in the former Biggers Bar B Q building.

The Elgin Depot Museum, housed in the turn-of-the-century Union Depot, covers the city's history from its railroad founding through the present day. Staff assist with genealogical research and historical photograph searches.

The Hogeye Festival, held each October, is Elgin's signature annual event. The name comes from a neighboring town once called Hogeye, after a fiddler who played only one song at local dances. The festival features live music, handmade arts and crafts, a BBQ Pork Cook-Off, and vintage farm equipment displays.

The Elgin Farmers' Market runs year-round every Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Veterans' Memorial Park in downtown, with live local music accompanying fresh produce and goods.

For something quieter, Evergreen Farms on Monkey Road has operated as a family farm since 1989, hosting thousands of Central Texas families each fall. The Elgin Christmas Tree Farm, now operated by the Prause family after a 2023 ownership change, continues a choose-and-cut tradition of more than 25 years.

Downtown also offers The Owl Wine Bar and Home Goods Store, a distinctive concept drawing visitors from outside the area, and The Clever Tiger, an art studio and working gallery.

Local Insights

Elgin's location on the I-130/SH-130 toll corridor, combined with direct access to Austin via US 290, has made it an increasingly attractive landing spot for families priced out of Austin and Round Rock. The semiconductor expansion at Yerico Manufacturing signals a broadening of the local economy beyond retail and food service.

The city's fiscal year 2025 audit showed total assets exceeding total liabilities by $68.7 million, and the city received its highest possible audit rating. For a city this size, that kind of balance sheet is worth noting.

The Texas BBQ Trail runs through Elgin, and both Southside Market and Meyer's appear on most serious Central Texas barbecue itineraries. If you are making the drive from Austin, budget time for both, and check whether the Thursday farmers' market lines up with your visit.
