LocalSquare started at a kitchen table in New Jersey during COVID.

My wife and I kept watching small businesses in our town struggle to stay visible. Restaurants, salons, contractors, tutors. People who were great at what they did but had no idea how to get found online. And the options that existed were brutal. Facebook ads wanted hundreds of dollars a month. Google Ads were even worse. Yelp wanted you to pay just to control your own page. For a local shop trying to make rent, none of that made sense.

So we thought, what if there was something simpler? Something that felt like the old bulletin boards you used to see at the library or the grocery store, but digital. A place where anyone in the neighborhood could pin their business and actually get seen by their neighbors.

We actually stepped away from LocalSquare for a while. We weren't happy with where things were heading and needed to rethink the approach. But during that time, we kept seeing the same problem get worse. Traditional advertising kept getting more expensive. Small businesses kept getting squeezed.

And then something else changed. Search changed. Google started using AI to answer questions directly. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Siri, Alexa. People weren't just typing into a search bar anymore.
